A Practical 90-Day Rollout for Securing Endpoint Agents

A week-by-week plan to stop risky agent behavior, govern access, and build runtime protection across employee devices, starting with discovery the EDR or MDM you already have.

Coding and productivity agents like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex are already on employee laptops connected to source code, cloud infrastructure, and SaaS apps. They can expose sensitive data or make destructive changes through tools they’re allowed to use. Risk can build across a sequence of permitted actions, making it difficult to catch by looking at each action alone. The challenge is knowing where to start and how to move from visibility to effective control.

This guide breaks it into four phases over 12 weeks:

  • Weeks 1–2: Discover and assign ownership. Inventory agents, MCP servers, skills, and linked accounts, and flag the highest-risk access.
  • Weeks 2–5: Establish approvals and least-privilege access. Decide which agents and tools are approved, for whom, and for which actions.
  • Weeks 4–8: Deploy runtime protection. Detect prompt injection, data leakage, and destructive actions, starting in monitor mode.
  • Weeks 7–12: Operationalize response. Connect alerts to your SOC, define containment, and measure what’s working.
